"Fantastic artfully-presented food" April 26, 2010
This place isn't all-show no-taste. My husband and I went there for Friday dinner with a co-worker and we started our evening meal off right: with cheese and charcuterie (and drinks, of course). We had the Bleu Bénédictin served with honey, a somewhat peppery cheese served with olives, venison salami with Brassica's grainy dill mustard, coppa served with house-made pickles, and rabbit rillettes served with house-made shredded pickled beets. Sliced baguette included, of course. Impressions? The pairings were very good, and for the first time ever, I enjoyed blue cheese. I can't say I'd had it real often - I was put off by one experience where the blue cheese I got tasted metallic. The Bleu Bénédictin; however, with the Chinook Honey Company's offerings, was fantastic. I quite enjoyed my rillettes too (being a fan of pâté and cretons, this was a nice new twist for me). The venison & coppa were great meats; the slightly peppery cheese was a nice contrast to the other flavours on the board too.My main course was the duck special, and boy am I happy I got it. Besides being good enough to bring tears to your eyes, it got my two fellow diners' votes as "nicest-looking dinner". It included some crispy duck leg confit, served with duck fat-fried potatoes, double-smoked bacon pieces, wilted spinach & arugula, topped with a duck egg sunny side up. What better way to enjoy one's weekly fat quota than with a gorgeously-crispy duck leg (bursting with flavour and its natural juices), or by dipping one's duck fat-fried potatoes in the runny yolky goodness of a duck egg? The double-smoked bacon and greens were certainly not a bad way to enjoy one's ruffage either. Folks, this was breakfast AND dinner in one plate - I tip my hat to the creator of this dish.My husband enjoyed a bison tenderloin with God Knows what else (I was so absorbed in my own dinner, I neglected to see the meat offering he'd left on my dinner board/plate - much to his amusement). Our fellow dinner enjoyed the Hogget (older than lamb, younger than mutton). Nobody had any complaints over food or service. What put our meal, from a service point of view, over the top was when the lady behind the counter we were sitting at answered our questions about this or that food she was preparing (they were quite busy). Then, when we asked about the chimney sticks' dark "skin", she offered up a sample for us. What kindness! They were fantastic (and now on my wishlist... I'll take one of those in my Christmas stocking, thank you). They even accommodated our friend's request to have a dollop of their pastry cream (they were using it with the lemon poppyseed cake my husband had) to go with his home-made cookie - how nice is that? I enjoyed my 'dainty': a fancied-up Rice Krispies square with a peanut butter center layer of sorts and chocolate on top ($3 - not bad). Only point for improvement - with everything served so beautifully, perhaps the 'dainty' could get a dusting of something just to dress it up visually (so it fits in with the rest). It was otherwise lovely. All in all, one very tasty, very satisfying dinner. Highly recommended for those who appreciate good ingredients prepared well.
"If a Farmers Market Was a Restaurant" March 20, 2010
Wonderful homey decor thats very inviting. Friendly staff that can answer questions or make some recommendations. Started off with 2 cheeses and some cured meat from the in house cheese shop which you can visit without having to eat at the restaurant. All dishes are made from local ingredients, we had the mac and cheese, which was awesome and a flank steak with potatoes and salad from the updated daily chalkboard of specials. Everything was delicious and very fresh. Highly recommend for those that like solid sit in your stomach sustainable eating
"Food to be savoured" February 15, 2010
Farm is a quaint little restaurant with decor likely to be found in your grandmothers kitchen. The food is nothing like what grandma would serve up. The cheese and meat pairings are delish with a large fabulous selection. Everyday there are fresh new specials and "tastes" to be sampled. The wine list is fantastic. This is not a place to come to if you are starving and looking to be filled. The purpose of farm is to deliver a fantastic array of flavors in combinations that titillate the taste buds.
"Ashamed it's taken me this long- astoundingly good!" July 31, 2009
I'll own up and say that although I was happy to see that we'd got, finally, a resto in Cgy that might be comparable to much-hyped SALT tasting room in Vancouver, a little voice inside my head always told me that the "charcuterie" thing was a trend that would end soon and was, I thought, a ripoff anyway. So I've avoided FARM. Last night I made it there, dinner alone, and I take it all back. ALL of it. This is BRILLIANT. BEAUTIFUL food and I loved every morsel.I had a three-item charcuterie assortment- I chose a beef-pork salumi, a duck liver pate and some 3-y/o cheddar. It came with three dressings (sask compote, tomato jam and raspberry mustard) and as much baguette as I wanted. It was incredible- I could never have salami this thinly-sliced and unctuous at home, and it all was just perfect. Cheese was the right temp, the sask compote worked perfectly with the pate, the bread was just gorgeous, all good! I also ordered a blackboard special for today, a salad of shaved porkloin on beautiful greens with goat cheese, FRESH peas, pine nuts and roasted yellow peppers with a sort of herby (not sweet, thank God) vinaigrette, and I also had a small portion of FARM's justly famous mac and cheese. I was all blow-me-away delicious.I am not a wine drinker (many give me headaches) so I had a nice house-made iced tea that was very good, so my $44 bill would have been less than it would have been otherwise, but it was money very well spent and I'll be back again and again. it was one of the most perfect dining experiences I've ever had.
"Fantastic and unique" August 13, 2009
This place is one of those finds you go...wow how did I not know about this place. Food is stellar! Service friendly and atmosphere great. I had the best grilled cheese I've ever had here, perfectly paired with a couple of glasses of Kung Fu Girl Reisling. What I really want to do is go back for their meats + cheeses plates... they looked awesome.
